Human Givens Therapy
Human Givens therapy
Human Givens is the name of a new school of Emotional Therapy, founded
by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrell. Although many of its techniques are derived
from other schools, they are chosen on the basis of their compatibility with
the most up-to-date knowledge about the working of the brain and the role of
emotions.
The underlying principle of Human Givens is that we are all, like every living
creature, born with a range of needs, and the resources to meet those
needs. Emotional distress, including depression and anxiety, arise when
our needs are not met. The aim of every Human Givens therapist is to work
with you to identify your unmet needs, and to discover or develop your
resources to meet them. We also believe that, whatever the original trigger
for difficulties, they exist in the present, not in the past, and it is in the
present we must deal with them.
Because we cannot think straight, or see solutions, when we are very
upset, angry or fearful, HG therapists use relaxation techniques to lower
arousal. Since those parts of the brain which hold memories, and where
emotions arise, are outside of the parts of the brain which use language, we
also use visualisations and metaphor, alongside discussion, to engage
both your emotions and thoughts in activating your own resources.
Many HG therapists have been trained in other therapies, and have adopted
HG because they find it gives good, and often speedy, results. It is effective
in many situations, including depression, phobias, PTSD and anger
management.
